3.The history
Our Sapporo Gokoku Shrine erected a memorial monument and held a Shinto memorial service for the repose of the spirits of the Tondenhei soldiers who died during the Seinan War (Seinan War) in 1877. What I mentioned is your creation. Since then, a memorial service has been held every year by the Tondenhei Headquarters.
At first, the memorial monument erected in front of Kairakuen in Kita-rokujo Nishi 7-chome was moved to the current Nakajima Park in 1907 and became a permanent installation. A shrine was also built.
After that, in 1922, the Ministry of Home Affairs gave permission to establish Shokonsha, and a temporary shrine was built on the premises of Maruyama’s Sapporo Shrine (currently Hokkaido Shrine) to dedicate the divine spirit. Then, after the precinct land was decided, the shrine was built at the current location in 1933, and the relocation ceremony was performed, and it became the enshrinement of Sapporo Shokonsha.
Since then, we have enshrined the spirits of many war dead who died in battle up to World War II, as well as the spirits of police officers and firefighters who died in the line of duty, and held memorial services.
In 1939, the name of the shrine was changed to Sapporo Gokoku Shrine, and at the same time, the shrine received the designation of Gokoku Shrine designated by the Minister of Home Affairs, and since then it has been worshiped by the Imperial Family.
After that, after the end of World War II, the current shrine was built in 1970, and in 1981 it celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding, and continues to this day. (Quoted from HP)
