3.The history
From the Keio era to the beginning of the Meiji era, people from Hakodate to Esashi, Shakotan, and Otaru traveled from Hakodate to Esashi, Shakotan, and Otaru in search of seafood, dreaming of a new world, crossing the waves of the North Sea. In particular, the area around Otaru was used as a base for resupplying goods and transportation to avoid rough land routes.
The place of enshrinement is a place of ancient Ainu rituals. At that time, the Ainu lived a life of fishing in the sea and hunting bears in the fields and mountains. They served sake and held ceremonies. “Inaho” is a piece of wood carved and used as a ritual implement, and it means god in the Ainu language and refers to a shrine. This is the reason why the area around the shrine is now called Inaho-cho.
This shrine was built in 1877 when the state-owned land was sold, and “Takeaki Enomoto” enshrined the ancestor Emperor Kanmu together at this Ainu festival site, and built a shrine with a donation of “Hokkaido protection” to ensure the peace of mind of immigrants. . The origin of the company name comes from the Ryugu Church in Esashi-cho, which was believed to be the god of the sea. In 1882, the company name was changed to Ryuguden. Ranked to Mukakusha in 1907. Afterwards, Duke Sanetaka Ichijo handwritten the calligraphy of “Ryugu Shrine” and “Holy God”, and in 1916, the name was changed to Ryugu Shrine, and it was elevated to a village shrine. 1918 Murasha Otaru Fushimi Shrine is transplanted into the precincts. In 1928, he was promoted to Gosha. In 1941, the shrine building was rebuilt, and it continues to this day. (Quoted from HP)
